Description The River opens up considerably in this section. It gets progressively wider. There’s few if any blow-downs to deal with. But it’s still very picturesque. Trees line both sides. Grassy marshlands eventually appear between the River and the woods. You see a few houses toward the end, but they’re kind of nice to see. They fit right in somehow. Access Take I-95 South (from Boston) all the way to Providence, where you swing East on I-195. Get off at exit 1 onto Fall Street on the north side of the X-Way and an immediate right onto Colfall Street. It becomes Fieldwood Avenue in less than a mile, and finally Miller Street very soon. Miller ends in about a mile at Providence Street. You're almost there. Take a right onto Providence, and you come the Bridge which crosses the Palmer River in just under a mile. There's a nice parking area on the right past the Bridge with good access to the water. Remarks The Palmer River tide is noticeable below Providence Street. Time it right and you can let the outgoing tide carry you along the slight current downstream. And then when it comes back in, you get a nice push back up. Visits 6/28/97 -- TBN solo. Went down this way after the upstream trip toward Shad Factory Pond was just too cluttered. I loved it. Especially after the obstacles and the confinement of the other direction, this piece felt so free and clear and just plain beautiful and relaxing. |
