I met Joan in August, 1972. I left my group of friends in Dedham and moved into her Cambridge apartment in January, 1973. In April we moved to our first new place together, half of a duplex right on the edge of the center of Belmont. We stayed there two years until some instinct told us to buy a house in Newton and we did. It was an old Victorian, in a neighborhood early in the transition to new and unimagined levesl of real estate value.

The Charles River helps shape Newton and that's where we started canoeing. I started systematically canoeing all over eastern Massachusetts in the 1980s and eventually made my first website as a way of sharing what I was doing.

We left Newton 26 years later. Our children had left the nest and for slightly different but substantially similar reasons, Joan and I were ready to live somewhere else.
